Starting Counseling
What should you expect?

Thinking about starting counseling?

I'll want to set up a 15 minute phone call or telehealth video session with you to find out about your particular situation.

During our phone call, we'll talk about the main issue, and how we would work together to help you, and cost.

If all goes well, we can schedule an appointment for your first counseling session.

Scheduling tip: If you have a pretty tight schedule, it may be best to schedule your sessions ahead to reserve the times you want.

But, maybe you're unsure about wanting to start counseling...

Wondering if it's the right thing for you?

During our phone/video consultation, we will discuss your situation. You can decide later if you'd like to start therapy.

I may also have information for you about options to therapy, a referral to a different therapist, or some other suggestion.

What to expect at your first counseling session.

Here's my office building in downtown Santa Barbara.

Starting counseling requires some initial paperwork. Come to the first session at least 15 minutes early.

When you walk into my waiting room, the paperwork will be on the coffee table for you to start filling out.

I'll be with you shortly.

During our session, I'll want to know more about your challenges.

It may feel strange to tell me personal stuff, but I think you'll soon be at ease...

We'll talk in depth, in order to really understand what's happening.

Toward the end of our session, we'll have an idea how long and how often you should come to see me, and what we'll be doing in therapy.

Commonly, I see clients weekly to once a month, depending on the situation. (As you feel better, you'll need to see me less often.)

As we end the first session, we'll talk about how it was for you - just to be sure we're on the right track.

I may give you a short assignment to do before next time.

I hope this gives you a good idea of what to expect.

See you in session.
